In the old days when machine tools wasn't available, Japanese farmers used to use hand sickles to remove all the weeds in their field.
Takemoto Sickle Mfg's history goes back to 1912. Currently 4th genration carries the family tradition.
This sickle has a thin blade (that's why it's called Usu-gama ('usu' means 'thin' and 'gama' means 'sickle') and is designed to use in a sitting position and hold it by right hand to cut soft grass above the surface of the soil.
You can sharpen the edge easily on a sharpening stone.
As the blade is sharp, it is highly recommended to wear garden gloves and long thick fabric pants when you use and to store it in a safe place, keeping out of reach from children.
